EV Charging at Home & Work
Level 1 vs Level 2 EV Charging: What You Actually Need
Every EV can charge from a regular outlet. The question is whether that's fast enough for how you drive.
Updated 2026-10-15
Level 1: the 120V outlet
Level 1 uses a standard 120V receptacle and adds roughly 3–5 miles of range per hour. Overnight, that's about 30–50 miles — enough for many commuters and plug-in hybrids. It costs nothing to install if a dedicated outlet is near the parking spot, though a dedicated 20A circuit is strongly recommended because EV charging runs for hours.
Level 2: the 240V circuit
Level 2 adds roughly 20–35 miles per hour depending on charger output and vehicle. A 32A charger (7.7 kW) on a 40A circuit fully recharges most EVs overnight; a 48A charger on a 60A circuit charges faster but needs more panel capacity.
- 16A charger → 20A circuit → ~12–15 mi/hr
- 32A charger → 40A circuit → ~25 mi/hr
- 40A charger → 50A circuit → ~30 mi/hr
- 48A charger → 60A circuit → ~35 mi/hr
Choosing
Base the decision on daily miles, not battery size. If you drive under 40 miles a day and park overnight, Level 1 may be fine. If you drive more, have two EVs, or want flexibility for trips, Level 2 is worth it — and you can dial the charger down to fit panel capacity.

Frequently asked questions
Is Level 2 charging bad for the battery?
No. Level 2 is well within what EV batteries are designed for. Frequent DC fast charging generates more heat than home Level 2 charging.
Can I use an extension cord for Level 1?
Manufacturers advise against it. Household extension cords can overheat under hours of continuous load. Have an outlet installed where you park.
What about DC fast charging at home?
Residential services can't support DC fast chargers, which draw 50 kW to 350 kW. They're found at public and fleet sites.
