FAQs
How many public EV charging stations are there in the U.S.?
WireCircuitPro maps public charging locations from OpenStreetMap, which is community-maintained and may not include every site. For an authoritative count, the U.S. Department of Energy's Alternative Fuels Data Center publishes official totals.
What's the difference between Level 2 and DC fast charging stations?
Level 2 stations deliver roughly 6–19 kW and suit destinations where cars park for hours. DC fast chargers deliver 50–350 kW and can add significant range in 20–40 minutes, which suits highway corridors and quick stops.
Which connector does my EV use?
Most non-Tesla EVs sold in North America have used J1772 for Level 2 and CCS1 for DC fast charging, while Tesla uses NACS. Many automakers are moving to NACS ports, and adapters are widely available.
Should I install a home charger if public stations are nearby?
Most EV owners do the majority of their charging at home because it's cheaper and more convenient. Public stations are best for road trips and drivers without home parking.
