Data Center & AI Infrastructure Power Basics
AI workloads push rack power densities far beyond traditional IT. The electrical design must deliver high capacity with redundancy.

Redundancy concepts
Common terms:
- N, N+1, 2N: how many redundant components exist beyond what the load needs
- Concurrent maintainability: maintain any component without dropping load
- Dual-corded IT loads fed from separate A/B paths
Power chain
Utility service and medium-voltage switchgear feed transformers, UPS systems, and distribution to PDUs or busway. Standby generators with paralleling switchgear back up the utility. Each link needs capacity for growth and maintenance bypasses.
High-density racks
GPU clusters can draw many times the power of traditional racks, often paired with liquid cooling. Electrical contractors must coordinate busway capacity, branch circuits, and cooling equipment power from the start.

Frequently asked questions
What should we ask an electrical contractor for AI build-outs?
Ask about experience with medium voltage, UPS and generator commissioning, busway, high-density rack power, and integrated systems testing.
How long do switchgear and transformers take to procure?
Lead times for large electrical equipment can be long; order early and confirm with suppliers.
Is commissioning separate from construction?
Often yes. Independent commissioning agents verify that systems perform as designed under load.
